HISTORY

Family legend says that during the Reconstruction after the Civil War, he came across the son of a scallywag politician beating a horse. (A scallywag is Northern supporter living in the South.) He beat the man near to death, then took his family and fled Alabama that night and eventually wound up in Texas.

The story above is a common "gone to Texas" story. The real reason that he took his family to Texas is probably the two years of severe drought (1865-1866) that caused many Alabama and Mississippi farmers to move to the rich farm land in Texas.

(Source: J.W. Croft Jr. He says that the family legend was told to him by a lady who was one of the descendents of Rebecca Pickens, wife of William Croft, mother of Israel Pickens. Rebecca Pickens remarried to Meredith Moses and the lady who told the family legend was a descendent of Pickens and Moses.)
